A trip to Singapore is never complete without trying out the local cuisine. Singapore is known to be a food haven with a wide range of cuisine types available any time of the day. Let us look at some of the food that one who visits Singapore has to try.
Chicken Rice
Chicken rice is all-time favorite among the locals and can be easily found anywhere in the country. This dish is said to be of Hainanese origin and is a well-celebrated dish in Singapore. The whole chicken is cooked by inserting it in a boiling pot of chicken bone stock so that the flavors are absorbed. Another variation to the steamed version is roasted chicken. The rice is cooked in chicken stock, ginger and garlic to enhance the fragrance. This is then eaten with chili and dark sauce.
Crabs
No seafood meal in Singapore is complete without trying out the crabs, pepper crab or chili crab. Chili crab is where the crabs are cooked with a sweet- spicy chili sauce and the black pepper crab is cooked with black pepper sauce. Usually, the chili crabs are best eaten with fried buns called mantous. To try the much famed crabs, you could head to the popular East Coast Seafood Centre where you will be able to find restaurants like Red House and Jumbo Seafood.
Bak Kut Teh
Bah Kut Teh is a soup consisting of pork ribs and a combination of Chinese herbs and spices. This soupy dish is usually paired with tea as it is commonly believed that tea would help dissolve the fat content in the soup. In Singapore, there are two types of Bak Kut Teh which are commonly served- Teochew style and Klang style. Each differs in the way the broth is made. Bak Kut Teh makes for an all day dish with many people eating it even for breakfast.
Char Kway Teow
Char Kway Teow is a well-celebrated signature dish in Singapore, consisting of flat rice noodles which is stir fried with sweet dark sauce, egg, pork lard at times, sausages and even fish cake. Variations to this dish include cockles that can be found in abundance in Singapore. Have this with some chili.
